Who are we?
We are a friendly hampshire-based four-part choir (soprano, also, tenor, bass) which proudly celebrated our 40th anniversary in 2019.
We are led by our conductor/director (Myles Tyrrell), supported by the Secretary and other members of the main committee and music-selection sub-committee. However, we aren’t at all stuffy and we certainly have a laugh when we’re together.
We are open to all, our principal objective being that members enjoy themselves singing and performing a wide variety of music.
Where can you find us?
The choir is based on the western outskirts of Southampton. We rehearse on Monday evenings at Hounsdown School, Jacobs Gutter Lane, Hounsdown, SO40 9FT, from 7.30pm to 9.00pm.
What do we sing?
Our repertoire is very wide-ranging (“from Bach to the Beatles”!) and is customarily tailored to the season or the nature of the occasion. Our music programmes include carols (old and new) for the Christmas period, perhaps more sacred music for Easter, and sometimes with a small orchestra or guest soloists, depending on the pieces. We balance that with some lighter music, perhaps ‘Golden Oldies’, songs from the shows, the Beatles or Carpenters, to name but a few, and perform them anywhere we can. We also have a repertoire of wedding music.
Who do we sing to?
At Christmas our carol concerts can be in great demand and you can find us in several church venues or hotels around the Waterside and New Forest area during December, including Christmas Eve. We fulful our community responsibility by singing at hospital units or for charity, and on Christmas Eve we provide a small group of singers to delight guests at hotels in the New Forest area.
We can also provide support to wedding congregations, or other events as requested.
What do we wear?
We wear all black with lime green accessories.
What else do we do?
We extend a warm and personal welcome to newcomers to ensure they feel at home as quickly as possible. Since Monday practices don’t allow much time for conversation, we put this right by arranging social events through the year. These give us opportunities to get to know our not-so-immediate neighbours in the choir. These can include skittles evenings, quiz nights, afternoon tea (very civilised!), or just popping to the local pub after rehearsals.
We are always happy to welcome new singers. If you can sing in tune and would like to be considered please contact the Secretary Mike Hutton at firstname.lastname@example.org.
